Jhamsikhel — "Jhamsi" to everyone who lives here — is the cafe and restaurant quarter of Lalitpur, a short walk south-west of Patan Durbar Square. Its streets hold a dense run of places to eat, bakeries, bookshops and small bars, which is why so many of the people working for embassies, NGOs and international schools end up living here. It suits a longer stay better than almost anywhere else in the valley: you can do everything on foot, the lanes are quieter than central Kathmandu, and you are twenty minutes from Patan's monument zone in one direction and the ring road in the other.
