Rooms for rent in Kathmandu

Your own private room in a shared flat — the kitchen and living space are shared, the room is not.

Renting a room rather than a whole flat is the cheapest comfortable way to stay in the valley for a few weeks or a few months, and it is how most students, volunteers and people on a first posting end up living here. Every room on this page is private and yours alone. What you share is the kitchen, the bathrooms and the living areas, with whoever else has taken a room in the same flat.

Because the rooms in one flat are let separately, each has its own rate and its own availability — a flat can have one room free and three taken. A room that is already occupied is not shown at all, so what you see on a listing is what you can actually take. If you want two rooms, for a couple of friends or a family, you can take more than one in the same flat.

Rooms go fastest in Jhamsikhel, Sanepa and Kupondole on the Lalitpur side, and around Lazimpat and Maharajgunj on the Kathmandu side — walkable to cafes, offices and the hospital, and far enough from Thamel to sleep.

Common questions

Is the room private or shared?

Private. You get your own room with its own door; the kitchen, bathrooms and living areas are shared with the other people in the flat. We do not let two strangers into one room.

Can I rent more than one room?

Yes. The rooms in a flat are listed separately, so you can take two or three in the same flat if you are travelling with other people.

Who else lives in the flat?

It varies by flat and changes as rooms turn over. Ask us before you commit and we will tell you who is there at the time — how many rooms are taken and by whom usually matters more than the photos.

What is the shortest stay for a room?

Rooms are quoted by the night, so a few nights is possible where a room is free. Most people renting a room stay a month or longer, and the weekly and monthly rates reflect that.
